Every mortgage a green mortgage

Our pledge: to plant 50 trees every time a customer takes a mortgage through L&C.


In 2007, we launched a pledge to make EVERY mortgage a green mortgage by planting 50 trees each time a customer took out a mortgage through us.

The pledge was a great success and thanks to our customers in 2007, we will be planting a total of 1.43 million trees in carefully selected sites in Africa (in partnership with our sister charity, Restore UK).  We are continuing our pledge into 2008 when we hope to plant a further 2 million trees.

Most people are interested in and willing to do their bit to help our environment, but the process should be as simple and hassle-free as possible in order for it to work on a larger scale. So what easier way for our customers to ‘do their bit’ than by having trees planted on their behalf simply by completing a mortgage through us? Not only will our customers have an ‘ecological mortgage’, but they will also be receiving expert free mortgage advice from L&C, the ‘consumer’s champion’ of mortgage brokers.

Green mortgages are currently available, but tend to be at the sacrifice of not obtaining the best interest rates. Therefore, we intend to lead the way by offering our customers the best deals from the whole of the market—including those great market-leading rates, plus an environmental bonus. After all, why should UK borrowers pay extra on their mortgage in order to help the environment?

By planting 50 trees on behalf of our customer, we will be planting enough trees to offset that person’s carbon emissions for the year. Our overall aim this year is to plant 2 million trees in selected sites worldwide. In keeping with our work ethic at L&C, our new tree planting activity is simple, clear, hassle-free and makes great sense.
