Green activities and policies

At L&C Mortgages, we strive to be an environmentally responsible company. We work with Climate Care, the Woodland Trust and local charity, Envolve, to give our green work direction.

As part of our pledge to make EVERY mortgage a green mortgage, we also work with the charity Restore UK to plant 50 trees for every mortgage taken out through us.

In 2003, we won a local Sustainable Business Award and were invited to judge the 2004 awards. This was in recognition of an internal campaign to reduce waste and raise environmental awareness within our office.

L&C became CarbonNeutral® with Future Forests in March 2001 until December 2004. During this time we planted 5,822 saplings in Devon and Snowdonia, meaning that we have covered almost 4 hectares with new forest: approx 5 ½ football pitches!

Climate Care

We then decided to work with Climate Care who have projects all round the world: restoring rainforests in Uganda, making 'green electricity' from methane, and installing energy efficient lighting in South Africa - to name but a few.

We also invest in tree planting as a means of rewarding customers who recommend our services. Currently, customers choose either M&S vouchers, champagne or to plant a tree through the Woodland Trust (see referral scheme page). So far, 506 customers have opted to plant a tree.

recyledpaper.jpgOur corporate stationery is printed on 100% recycled paper. We don’t use notepads, but reuse our waste paper which we strive to keep at a minimum. Nearly all our paper is recycled, including newspapers. We also recycle drinks cans, which staff take to recycling depots after work.

We have a voluntary staff Green Team at L&C, who encourage colleagues to cut down on waste. We also have motion sensitive lighting and lights on timers, where possible. There are recycling containers in the office and posters to remind about good habits.

Our aim is to implement simple changes that can make a big difference. We have brought about social change at L&C, have enhanced environmental awareness and have created a caring environment in which to work.
